Scrum Master Role and Responsibilities

Who is a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master is an integral part of the Scrum Team along with the Product Owner and Development Team. The Scrum Master is a person who possesses knowledge of the Scrum framework and facilitates and enforces the Scrum process. Scrum Masters help the Product Owner to maximise the value of a product and they help the Team members deliver this value by fostering creativity, removing impediments, and coaching them.

What is the role of a Scrum Master?

A Scrum Master’s primary focus is the team. Their day-to-day efforts are directed towards increasing the efficiency of the team, ensuring that team has effective communication flow and that they work collaboratively.

So what is the role of a Scrum Master in a Scrum Team? Here are some of the ways that a Scrum Master contributes:

  1. A Scrum Master helps the team to stay focused on their tasks and goals.
  2. A Scrum Master helps the team to manage their time, energy, and priorities in an efficient way.
  3. A Scrum Master helps the team keep track of their progress and makes sure that they are making steady progress towards the completion of a project or task at hand.
  4. A Scrum Master helps the team to get rid of any communication barriers or other obstacles that might be holding them back from completing a task or project successfully.

Is the Scrum Master the leader of the Scrum Team?

A Scrum Master does not have formal authority and, as such, is not the leader of the team. Instead, they are said to be “servant-leaders”. A servant-leader sees leadership as an opportunity to serve their team and shares power and control with the team to encourage ownership. Servant-leaders do not measure success through output but through growth and development.

What are the Responsibilities of a Scrum Master?

Scrum masters are often misunderstood, with many people thinking that they are just project managers. In reality, a scrum master is responsible for ensuring that the scrum process is followed and for managing the team’s interactions with stakeholders. They are not involved in decision-making but they make sure that all members of the team are aligned with each other. They are also not expected to possess technical or design expertise and are not responsible for the tasks that team members do.

However, a scrum master has very clearcut responsibilities per the Scrum GuideTM, including:

  1. Facilitating and organizing Scrum events.
  2. Removing impediments to the Scrum Team’s progress.
  3. Coaching the team members and encouraging them to work collaboratively.
  4. Helping the team focus on creating high-value Increments during each Sprint.
  5. Helping the Product Owner by increasing the team’s effectiveness and facilitating collaboration and communication between the team and stakeholders.
  6. Helping the organization by providing training on Scrum adoption and advising management on Scrum implementation.
